The Incident Stage—this is where there’s an eruption of the tension, and controlling behavior takes center stage. Typically, this involves threats, humiliation, gaslighting (manipulating someone into questioning their own sanity or rendition of events), and isolation.

The Reconciliation Stage—this stage is also called the “honeymoon” phase, and is where the perpetrator tries to reestablish a connection, likely shows remorse, bombs the person with love gestures (this is called love bombing, or the act of overwhelming a person with over-the-top, insincere gestures and promises of love), and makes a commitment to not continue the undesired behavior, typically with the end goal of gaining back trust. Many times that accountability doesn’t happen, and instead they will gaslight their victim so that they will be the one to apologize and believe the abuse was their fault.
